A very handsom man smiles from a rock on the Oregon coast. He's very charismatic.

Words About A Guy

Depending on how he's feeling when you ask him, Mike DeLue might tell you he's from Pennsylvania, Montana, "North America", or the internet. Born and raised (mostly) in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania a combination of encouraging foreign language teachers and a box of old National Geographic magazines birthed in him a global passion from a young age. Little wonder he would end up spending the last decade living and working across four continents.

While working and teaching as part of the JET Program in rural Hokkaido he found a love for back-country endeavors. While tragic, it was the loss of a close friend in an avalanche which spurred in Mike a desire to be more responsible and knowledgeable about back-country risks. And thus a man's risk management journey began. Ever since he has been combining his experience in education with his passion for the wilderness and his love of research. Polar climate change and development policy may be his biggest focus, but this desire to put the principles of responsible decision-making into action at all levels permeate everything he does. Whether it is planning for the safety and effectiveness of a small data collection trip or building more effective international climate change mitigation policy, the principles are the same: plan, prevent, and prepare. Then get on with it and do the best job you can do.

In his free time you can find Mike enjoying outdoor activities of all types from rock climbing to snowboarding to scuba diving. The rest of the time he can be found burying himself in podcasts, studying foreign languages, or puttering around in the kitchen (try his Okonomiyaki). He loves to find a way to enjoy the places he ends up which has resulted in alternately an only-mildly-subtle campaign to get #mycologyphotography trending on instagram, a detailed knowledge all the best mountain roads for motorcycle touring in Hokkaido, and perhaps too great an enthusiasm for BBC panel shows for someone with such a strong American accent.
