supporting world class research
Over the years I have developed a skill and passion for the behind-the-scenes work that makes research possible. When it comes to logistics, backcountry travel, risk planning, and even on-site wilderness first response I enjoy working with support staff and researchers around the globe. With the University of Manchester this has consisted of assisting in the updating of GIS course materials. At the School for Field Studies Centre for Rainforest Studies risk management plans and coordination between our site and headquarters for safety and student life was my area of expertise.
Building better development policy
A persistent engagement in academia has led me to be passionate about my own research. This focus comes at the nexus of policy and science and is rooted in constantly questioning how we can do development, prosperity, and disaster mitigation better. My research has a regional focus on the Pacific region, Polar affairs, and the maritime issues that come part and parcel with both. Critical engagement with academics across the disaster management and political science spheres has been important and I am excited about the opportunity to expand on the connection between climate change adaptation and sustainable polar policy.
Community outreach and education
A running theme through my entire professional career has been an attachment to community outreach and education. At both my undergraduate and postgraduate institutions I have been a teaching assistant, and all of my professional positions have involved regular involvement in the education process. Whether I am standing at the front of a lecture theater, working with small groups in the field, or engaging through the media I enjoy the opportunity to share my expertise, and to learn from others through community engagement.
